New Haitian Mission Baptist School - Port de Paix, Haiti

This one room school is located in the center of Haiti’s fourth largest city. It has 270 students and eight teachers. School is conducted in two separate sessions. One half of the students attend school in the morning session and the other half attend during the afternoon session. Teachers use portable chalkboards to divide one class area from another. As you can imagine, it is crowded, noisy and hot. Mission Discovery’s HOLD the children child sponsorship program was “born” in this school in 1999. Since then school enrollment has doubled. Mission Discovery mission teams visit the school each year to deliver supplies and encourage the teachers and children.

New Haitian Mission Baptist School - La Veaud, Haiti

The school of La Veaud is located in the country about six miles east of Haiti’s northern-most city of Port de Paix. There are 215 students and eight teachers in this school. Coconut and banana trees flourish all around the school and a river runs beside this country community. Ladies bring their laundry to the river to wash and then lay the clothes out on the stones and bushes to dry in the sun. Mission Discovery bought property in this community and is building an orphanage and mission station near the school.

New Haitian Mission Baptist School - New Bethlehem, Haiti

This two-story concrete school building is carved into a steep hillside that overlooks valley wetlands below. The school is located just outside Haiti’s fourth largest city of Port de Paix. Ladies cook the daily hot lunch of rice and beans and chicken on charcoal fires outside the school. A few years ago a Mission Discovery mission team worked with the locals to mix concrete by hand and pour the entire church/school floor. The floor is no longer dusty in the dry season and muddy in the rainy season.

Victory Christian FSBS - Lilliput, Rose Hall, St James, Jamaica

Victory Christian Fellowship Supreme Basic School (VCFSBS) began in September of 2003. Pastor Leroy Blackwood’s vision is to provide education and training for poor children in the Lilliput community. Mission Discovery has partnered with Pastor Blackwood for the past three years. Our adult and youth mission teams have helped build Victory Christian Fellowship Church. Although the school is new, there is plenty of activity there each school day. Four teachers and a teacher’s aid work with 120 children. The school seems to grow daily!

Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf - Montego Bay, Jamaica

Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf (JCSD) is located in the mountains of Eden District just outside of Montego Bay, Jamaica. JCSD is a residential school that cares for 31 special needs children. Founded in 1990 as a subsidiary of American Ministries to the Deaf, JCSD’s 15 staff members provide general education classes, Bible instruction and Christian love and witness to each student. Older children are provided work experience in areas of auto mechanics, hairdressing, office work, graphic arts and dressmaking. JCSD is a private school not funded by the Jamaican government. Therefore, the school is always in need of help.

Nazareth Baptist Church-School - Nazareth, Haiti

Nazareth Baptist Church-School is located on the west side of the bustling north coast city of Port de Paix. Pastor Otandieu Jean-Louis is the founder of the church and administrator of this primary school of 135 students. Mission Discovery has partnered with New Haitian Mission Baptist Association (NHMBA) to develop and support this work. Dr. Cherelus Exanté, director of NHMBA, oversees Pastor Otandieu and his work. Mission Discovery mission teams have helped build this facility and have been well received in the community. Neighbors helped the team mix cement, lay blocks, and even cooked them lunch. This church-school stands out in the community as a beacon of Christian truth and hope. It also meets a strategic need for quality education and compassionate care.
